Clean Water Project

Global efforts by the World Health Organization (WHO) aimed at achieving the Millennium Development Goal, which is aiming for 75% by the year 2015, seem to have not been as effective as planned.

“Surface water sources are often highly polluted, and infrastructure to pipe water from fresh, clean sources to arid areas is too costly of an endeavor. Groundwater is the best resource to tap to provide clean water to the majority of areas in Africa, especially rural Africa, and groundwater has the benefit of being naturally protected from bacterial contamination and is a reliable source during droughts. However, the high costs associated with drilling for water, and the technical challenges in finding sources that are large enough to serve the population in need present challenges that limit tapping the resource”. (WHO)

Strategy

  • To provide Clean Water using appropriate relevant technology (Drilling Rig, Equipment for hand dug wells, portable hand filters)
  • Drilling ground water that is manageable: Participating communities take ownership (with 20% financial andlabor participation).
  • Hand-dug wells with concrete rings preventing collapse.
  • Evangelism of local communities an essential part of strategy
  • To provide Hand-Filter : eg Life Straws…

STATISTICS

  • 319 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa are without access to improved reliable drinking water sources.

  • Sub-Saharan Africa is among the regions with the greatest drinking water spending needs, with the greatest investment needs in rural areas.

  • Two third or about 102million of the 159 million people still using surface water live in Sub Sahara Africa

Making a difference

Calvary Ministry (CAPRO) was started by a bunch of young college graduates over 45 years ago with the goal of making Christ known in the Muslim dominated northern Nigeria. This, through the power of the Holy Spirit, became one of the very first indigenous mission agencies in Africa. Today, there are well over 700 missionaries from 26 nationalities serving in 36 countries in the continents of Africa, Middle East and Europe and Americas.

CAPRO is a faith- based mission organization targeting the unreached peoples and in most cases unengaged people groups of our world. Each missionary is responsible for raising his/her support. God has been faithful over the years and it has been very inspiring to see how He has continued to meet the needs of those who answered the call as they transitioned through the various stages of life – from single men and women, to married couples, to parents and even grandparents.

We are now beginning to witness some of the early missionaries getting to the next phase of life when things slow down – aka, retirement age. Retiring missionaries are always jolted when they discover that the world is no longer what they imagine. Issues arise needing their attention. Some of the challenges
these missionaries now face include:
• Health issues.
• Housing.
• Significantly reduced support as they are “no longer on the field”.
• Some who are relocating to an environment they have left for most of their adult lives with little or no support system and nothing to “fall back on”.
